Known to indigenous cultures for its many traditional uses this North American wildflower is also known as Wild Bergamot. It is a member of the mint family and has a fragrance similar to oregano.

Bee balm has a long history of use for its supportive properties. The name bee balm is derived from its traditional use in a salve made for calming occasional skin irritations from stings. Teas provide nervine benefits as well as soothing digestive discomfort and menstrual cramps.

Many tribes use Wild Bergamot to treat colds, coughs, and sore throats. A tea may be made from the leaves and flowers, or inhale the steam from a hot infusion.  It is used to treat skin infections, cuts, and wounds. Some tribes make poultices from the plant to apply to affected areas.

Some tribes use it to relieve headaches, either by inhaling the scent of the crushed leaves or applying a poultice to the head.

Other Uses:

  • Food: Some Native American tribes used wild bergamot as a seasoning in cooking.
  • Beverage: The Oswego tribe is particularly known for using it to make a tea, which is why it's sometimes called "Oswego tea."
  • Insect Repellent: It has also been used as an insect repellent.
