Burdock has been an important botanical in Western folk herbalism and traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, being valued for its cleansing and skin smoothing benefits. The entire plant is edible and is a popular vegetable in Asia, particularly in Japan. Recently burdock has been a popular ingredient in hair products and in cosmetics for mature skin.
Burdock is considered to be the best known medicinal for skin conditions, by many herbalists. It is highly effective, gentle, and multipurpose. It promotes circulation to the skin, is a mild diuretic and is used widely as a blood purifier. Burdock leaves can be made into a poultice to soothe poison oak or poison ivy and a leaf decoction makes a soothing wash for the skin.
Throughout history the root has been thought to carry magical powers, particularly of protection and healing. It is believed that wearing a necklace made of Burdock Root, gathered during a waning moon, would protect the wearer from evil and negativity.
In Native American herbalism, the plant was used by the Malecite, Micmac, Ojibwa, and Menominee for skin health. The roots were dried by the Iroquois over a fire and stored for long-term storage. They also utilized it in medicinal baths.
Burdock roots are very fibrous, resulting in soft, stringy, cottony-type material when cut.
Burdock Root can be used to make a pleasant tasting tea.
To prepare as tea: Pour 8 oz. boiling water over 1 tsp. of herb.
Cover and steep 3-5 minutes.
Strain, Serve, Enjoy!
