Oat tops are the milky tops of the oat plant. A popular cereal grain for thousands of years and the young, milky oat tops are a favorite among herbalists for their calming and nutritive properties. Oat tops are commonly used in tinctures and teas, but can also be used in many bath and body formulas.

Oatstraw tea is believed to have a calming effect and may be used to support relaxation and sleep. Oatstraw is rich in vitamins and minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and silica. It may be used to support bone health, nervous system function, and overall well-being.

  • Ingredients:

    • 1-2 teaspoons of dried oatstraw
    • 1 cup of hot water (not boiling)
    • Optional: Honey, lemon, or other herbs to taste

    Instructions:

    1. Prepare the oatstraw: You can lightly crush or chop it to increase the surface area for steeping.
    2. Combine ingredients: Place the oatstraw in a mug or teapot. Pour the hot water over the oatstraw.
    3. Steep: Cover the mug or teapot and let the tea steep for 15-20 minutes, or even longer for a stronger infusion. Some people steep it for several hours for a more potent tea.
    4. Strain: Strain the tea through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the plant material.
    5. Serve: Drink the tea warm. You can add honey, lemon, or other herbs like chamomile or mint to taste, if desired.

      Important Considerations:

      • Taste: Oatstraw tea has a mild, slightly sweet, and grassy flavor. It's generally considered pleasant and soothing.
      • Dosage: Start with one cup of oatstraw tea per day and adjust as needed. There's not a standard dosage, so listen to your body.
      • Timing: Oatstraw tea can be enjoyed anytime of day. Some people find it particularly helpful before bedtime for relaxation.

Adding oatstraw to bathwater can be a soothing experience. It may help to relieve skin irritations, itching, and dryness. Oatstraw infusions have been used as a hair rinse to promote healthy hair growth and add shine.

An oatstraw bath tea can be a lovely way to soothe your skin and potentially ease muscle tension. Here's how to prepare one:

What you'll need:

  • 1-2 cups of dried oatstraw (or several oatstraw tea bags)
  • Hot water
  • A muslin bag, cheesecloth, or a clean sock

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the oatstraw infusion: Place the dried oatstraw (or tea bags) in a large bowl. Pour hot (but not boiling) water over the oatstraw.
  2. Steep: Let the mixture steep for about 20-30 minutes, or even longer for a stronger infusion. Some people steep it overnight.
  3. Fill the bag: Pour the steeped mixture (including the oatstraw) into your muslin bag, cheesecloth, or sock and tie it securely.
  4. Prepare the bath: Fill your bathtub with warm water. The water should be comfortably warm, not hot.
  5. Add the oatstraw bag: Place the bag containing the oatstraw infusion into the bathwater.
  6. Soak: Soak in the bath for 20-30 minutes, squeezing the bag occasionally to release more of the oatstraw extract into the water.

Oatstraw has been used traditionally for hair care, often touted for its potential to promote healthy hair growth and improve hair's overall appearance.

Oatstraw is rich in vitamins and minerals, including silica, which is thought to be beneficial for hair health. The silica content may help strengthen hair strands, reducing breakage and promoting growth. It may add shine and luster to hair and help soothe an irritated or itchy scalp.

How to Use Oatstraw for Hair:

  • Infusion/Rinse: This is the most common method. Make a strong infusion by steeping oatstraw in hot water (not boiling) for 20-30 minutes or longer. After shampooing and conditioning, pour the cooled infusion over your hair as a final rinse. Do not rinse it out.
  • Added to Shampoo or Conditioner: You can add a strong oatstraw infusion to your shampoo or conditioner.
  • Hair Mask: Create a hair mask by mixing oatstraw infusion with other beneficial ingredients like yogurt, honey, or oils. Apply to your hair, leave it on for a while, and then rinse.
